For me the ending made sense and tied back to the more fantastical beginnings. It seemed like a logical way to end the book. What was the alternative? Have her retire on an island somewhere to live out a mortal life? That would have been less satisfying, I think.
I wasn't sure how else it could have ended. I was glad it wasn't some fairy tale "girl and guy live happily ever after" ending, and considering the time it was written, it was refreshing.
