I always find this type of Win Hoff stuff a little too woo woo for me but it was essential for the story. Probably one of the least interesting parts of the book unfortunately.
I didn't find this aspect especially interesting or remarkable, to be honest.
I thought it was a missed opportunity. This kind of bodily control is clearly a fantasy of many people, but it is presented as individual accomplishment, which raises the question, Where did it come from? Why isn't it widespread through the interstellar society? Because this is a story about a special individual growing up into a hero, not SF.
I found it fascinating. And not magical, and not a polemic conceit.
