The Saint of Bright Doors Q6 – Gaming

1

Does this setting inspire any solid gaming ideas for you? With devils, doors, demi-gods, and more D words that I can’t think of off of the top of my head, does Luriat and beyond provide enough fodder along with Fetter to bring about anything that you could work with?

It would be a serious heap of detail for a GM to keep track of :) The identity cards alone were fearfully complex...

There's some interesting world-building there, even if it's mostly ignored in the book. There's the portal fantasy of the Bright Doors, and perhaps the associated devils that come through them.

Religion is a big thing, with so many sects and so many almost-chosen people. What are all the chosen people doing? How do those smaller sects work, outside the two Paths that feature in the book.

And who else is using magic to reshape the world to the extent that the Perfect did? Conflicts between chosen, contested by reshaping reality, could be an interesting area to explore.

But all of those would require a fair bit of additional world-building to bring into play. There's little in the book that explores them.

Lots. This is very much the kind of setting I want to next play with, including the South Asian cosmology. It's encouraging to see how the problem of presenting what is going on to a reader / player who doesn't really understand the situation was quite helpful.

In say Tekumel, this problem of introducing player's to the fact their characters are not their selves is dealt with by the "fresh off the ship" trope, but I want something more like Pendragon where people are born into decision making that is not their own, but their decisions are not based on what our present day decisions are based on. The Worm Ouroborous etc. is another example of the kind of world-building I find interesting to try and play with, although like Pendragon it's mostly about the top of a society, whereas I am more interested in the middle / bottom.

Working out how to help player's make decisions in situations like these isn't easy for me, which is why I am so pleased with @clash_bowley 's help a few weeks ago. I hope it will lead to very interesting play.

This would be a highly challenging world to try and base a game in but in the right hands would be really really interesting. More interesting that the book in my view!
