Eversion 4 - The Characters

Granted that we had pretty much the same cast of characters each iteration, did you feel you gradually got to know them better? When you finally learned about their real identities, were there any surprises left?

By the end I thought this was a weakness with the book as a novel. There weren't really characters. They were more place-holders to reveal the clever conceit. The difficulty is that conceits are like 0-calorie snacks. We're better off if we don't eat them at all, and simply eat wholesome meals.

Well I, for one, enjoyed our cast of characters. As iterations went on, approaching reality, they became more and more complex, which was fun.

Most of the characters felt like background noise for the most part for Silas, but I was ok with that. This is surprising for me as generally I prefer books that give me rich characters and this one didn't have a lot of that. However, I found myself having some empathy for an AI, and just enough to make me think yet again about sentience and where we are headed as a society.

The first time meeting the characters was fun, but I didn't notice any particular change in them from cycle to cycle.

I mostly answered this in Q2, but essentially I agree with how Barner put it. The characters felt like placeholders for a conceit, and the conceit wasn't all that interesting.
