Come to think of it, a 3 on a D20 in BRP is, I think, the dreaded 'Left Leg'.
-
@BarnerCobblewood Fixed. @clash_bowley & @NeilNjae still to roll. I'm guessing @rossum and @Ray_Otus will join us later.
-
(Quote) In BRP, that just might be a crit!

OK, let's go for it. Here's a dice-roller for those who want one. Roll a single D20. Highest roll goes first, and then in descending order. Ties to be broken by post order. diceroller.co/d20roller My roll is: 16

And I was measured. Certainly, it wasn't the progressive or low conflict aspects I objected to - it was more the derivative nature of the setting and language (which isn't unique to this book, but endemic to the current state of SF&F publishing,…

Good point re: rehabilitation, @NeilNjae . Dorcas seems unconvinced, in any case. I feel like the writing is even better in this book than the previous two. The first few chapters are lovely, anyway. Interesting that the Archon has a first name, n…

@Michael_S_Miller , @rossum and @Ray_Otus Are you guys in? No reason we can't change the rotation later or even interrupt it occasionally to fit someone in on a less regular basis, if anyone doesn't want to commit right now.

I can think of worse debacles - The Name of the Wind, for example, when we finally coaxed a lurker into nominating a book, and nobody read it, and he posted a discussion starter, then I posted my opinion (which wasn't altogether favourable) and nobo…

I'm really curious to hear more about this gaming of causality and perception - like maybe an example. Perhaps when we read the book...!
-
Latest? How many are there?
-
I'm willing to bet a lot of club members feel that way. Maybe we're too hard on books!
-
I know, and me too - but I'd play it again if you ran it.
-
I've mentioned it before, but I think we should have a Book Club Con in the Lake District. Hiking by day, games by evening, craft beer all round. A game of Liminal or Trail of Cthulhu by Dr Mitch, Mythic Babylon or High Strung by Apocryphal, Pig-Boa…

You can also surf the tidal bore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQk0w00u8sM I've spent a fair amount of time on the other side of the Solway, and even once attended the Palnackie World Flounder Tramping Championship to experience a very different…

I guess - the whole tunneling thing was pretty much in the background, though. My feeling is that the author mainly just wanted to tell a story in the style of Star Trek, and wanted to make sure it was up-beat. And she certainly succeeded. If the st…

I kind of felt the 'computer dying' thing was inspired by The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, which I felt handled it in a more interesting fashion. And speaking of The Moon, it's characters are ordinary people. Shevik, in The Dispossessed, is an ordinar…

I think that, from the 'plot-point' perspective, the whole 'takes a village to save a Siniat' is a pretty cool idea. I get the sense that @Michael_S_Miller 's appreciation for the novel is coming mainly from the 'writing' angle, but this is certainl…

@Michael_S_Miller - these are great posts you[ve made and I will respond - just tied up at the moment.
-
Sounds like great advice @NeilNjae ! I'm going to move that post over to the book discussion thread when I create it, but will leave it here for now.
-
Actually, I did quite like Dr. Chef - he was an interesting character. Looking through @Michael_S_Miller 's notes on Goodreads, there's more to this book than I think I'm giving it credit for, but then again that's one reason I like this book club -…

I'm not sure I got enough out of the book to answer the first question. As for the second, though, teamwork was definitely a factor, as is usually the case when there's an ensemble cast. This is pretty much stock TV fodder - look at Star Trek (all v…

Hmm. I don't have any examples from the book to offer. I rather liked the captain's coy affair with the alien soldier. I'm not sure that was a result of skill, rather than personality. Combat skills being over-represented - yes, that's certainly tr…

I think this is my preferred method of world-building - to show, not tell, about the world by means of the character's behaviour, rituals, acts, and so forth. I don't really want long expositions from the author, though at time this is welcome as a …

I really rather enjoyed these three chapters - I thought the writing was especially good. Here again, we get the line that it is our greatest sin that we are only capable of being what we are. Not sure why that would be a sin, but that's the second …

Well, I guess its just the four of us these days, and @dr_mitch . Shall we do Chill, then? I'm going to suggest we just take turns picking the monthly books, like we used to.
-
Chill does sound good - ideal summer reading, maybe.
-
Don't be sorry, and no need to withdraw it. We just need more people to show up and enthuse over something.
-
Those both sound cool, and I’ve at times thought about getting Ron Edwards in to maybe do a guest read with us. How long is City of Brass? We’ve had other nominations before, too, that we still haven’t read - so note to everyone, please show enthus…

I do remember, and so long as Richard is ok with getting that level of scrutiny from his friends, not all of whom may like the book, then I'm willing. But most authors don't want to participate in book club analysis of their books, from what I under…

I see the encounter with this servant, or maiden, of Abaia as a test, not a coincidence. (Quote)
