89. (June 2020) Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
After flirting with Red Mars for a bit, I've settled on Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moren0-Garcia. The blurb says:
The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own.
Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it—and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea’s demise, but success could make her dreams come true.
In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey from the jungles of Yucatán to the bright lights of Mexico City—and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld.
I was attracted to it when I read Book Page's description: "The ever-wonderful Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s superb world building and lush prose bring Jazz Age Mexico to life in this stunning historical fantasy that plays with archetypes from Greek and Mayan mythology alike."

Boughted! Hope I can read it!
I hope so, too.
A mere £4.99 on UK Amazon Kindle
That sounds more fair for a “licensed” copy than the U.S. price.
Sounds great - I already got my hardback in the mail.
I'm being slow with this one (and this whole month with reading in general - I've finished half a book, which is weird for me). So I'll join you later on when I have my mojo back.
I’ve been sick and still am, so I’m running a bit late getting discussion questions up.
I'm ready whenever. The discussion category is here: https://www.ttrpbc.com/categories/89-(june-2020)-gods-of-jade-and-shadow-by-silvia-moreno-garcia if anyone wants to set up notifications.
I'm about 2/3 through, really enjoying it but juggling with all the tasks needed in the week running up to our first opening after lockdown (yay)
I'm ready to discuss whenever everyone else is.
Thanks, everyone, for your patience. My medical problems have not been severe, but They have been extensive and exhausting. The last few weeks have involved my General Practitioner, an Ear Nose Throat specialist, a Gastroenteroligist, and a Urologist. I’ve had one ailment after another with some of them overlapping. I just haven’t had it in me to finish the book and post any questions.
Until now! I finished the book today and should have some discussion questions up tomorrow.
Sounds grim, glad it's behind you now

Ah! Got it!
Glad you're feeling better @WildCard . All that sounds...inconvenient. Yes, that's a good euphemism.
I'll be with you when I'm finished which still isn't yet as I've got distracted. But soon.
