I thought it was odd at first. I found the historical part more interesting, I suppose. It never really left the myth behind, though. Did it work for me? I’m not really sure how to answer that. I didn’t have a problem with it from a plot perspective, though I was a bit mystified as to why this book received the hype it did.
I thought this was a book that started off delightful and while it didn't maintain that throughout, was an enjoyable little tale. The comparisons to The Hobbit etc would be a little overstated I think, but it's definitely one that I would have enjoyed quite a lot when I was younger (and still enjoyed now). I would have liked it to be longer actually.
I read the first couple chapters to my wife before bed out loud and she loved it. The humour and the tone were just right for a quick story time.
Really glad I read this.
