Question 4: Chung Mae

1

We follow along with Chung Mae throughout the novel as she makes all kinds of interesting decisions. As she navigated these current and upcoming changes did you find yourself agreeing or relating to her decisions, or did she frustrate you with the things that she did and the decisions she made. Did you like her character, and were rooting for her to figure things out, or did you experience something else?

I found her rather enigmatic, and never quite felt that I knew her very well - part of her was always hidden, which was an appropriate way to write her, I think. I was never quite sure how she would react to the next situation.
I wasn't entirely sold on the unusual (to say the least) pregnancy, and got curious enough to do some looking up. Seems that it has been a folklore motif for a long time, but there is no evidence from human biology that any part of the process could actually happen. So I decided just to take it as a curious device signaling something about things happening that were counter to cultural norms, and not to take it too seriously!
