Current book choice rotation thread
All,
the time has come to find you who would like to select a monthly book choice and then set up some discussion starters.
We already have a choice for September 2021 - @NeilNjae has picked out Vita Nostra , a Ukrainian novel that seems to defy easy explanation.
Here is a list of people who have been involved with the club in the last little while (if I have forgotten anyone, first of all apologies and secondly please could someone include them with a mention):
@Apocryphal
@BarnerCobblewood
@Bill_White

Could anyone interested in picking out a book please reply on this thread (or directly to me / @Apocryphal ) before the end of August please. We can then find out who's doing which month. A list of books read up until summer 2018 can be found at this link https://www.ttrpbc.com/discussion/12/the-first-seven-years#latest
- there may be a more up to date list but I'm not sure where to find it...

Excellent thanks @clash_bowley
Me too, obviously. I wouldn't hold out for anyone other than the current regulars.

Cool, thanks
I love you guys, and I’ve been reading almost everything. I just don’t have time or energy to comment much (on time, at least), and I’m certain,y not up to leading a discussion right now. Maybe next rotation.

Ditto!
Not a problem at all - but as and when you feel up to it just drop me or @Apocryphal a note and we'll make space for you. No pressure
I have added the category for Vita Nostra hosted by @NeilNjae - anyone who likes notifications can now set them up for September.
Looks like a short list of volunteers! I'd better get something ready!
OK... looks like @NeilNjae @Apocryphal @clash_bowley and me, plus @BarnerCobblewood who is on the ball for Cloud Atlas (which, by the way, I have hugely enjoyed). @BurnAfterRunning do you feel like organising another read to follow your selection of Mort?
@NeilNjae is already set up for Vita Nostra in September. That leaves @Apocryphal @clash_bowley and me (and maybe @BurnAfterRunning ) to sort out October, November, December (and maybe January). You guys want to generate a random dice throw? Say D20 for definiteness? Or would you rather keep to the previous order which would be @clash_bowley then me then @Apocryphal ?
If you don't mind, I'll take November as it's my birthday month!
I have no preference. I suspect Burn After Running is out for good. As a group, we're getting smaller - though 6 is still not bad.
OK let's go for me in October, @clash_bowley in November and @Apocryphal in December (with @NeilNjae already set up for September) - that should give you a breathing space @Apocryphal while you're getting us into The Gradual
Sounds good - and thanks for thinking of me wrt the slow read - that hadn't occurred to me!
I'd like to run Binti - the Afrofuturist SF Nebula and Hugo award winner by Nnedi Okorafor. It's a novella, so it's short. I have not read it, but it looks interesting.
Kindle
I will try to find a print edition

Sounds fun!
I've read it, it's good. Interesting to see a different cultural background in SF.
There are two more novellas after that, I think. Perhaps we could fit more than one novella into the month, depending on preference.
Also note that Okorafor strongly dislikes the term "afrofuturism" for her work and prefers "africanfuturism". She says the former concentrates on Afro-American stories, while the latter is based on Africa itself. https://nnedi.blogspot.com/2019/10/africanfuturism-defined.html
Yes! Very much so!
I have all three on Kindle - I wasn't sure they were all novellas. I wouldn't mind doing all three, I think!
Makes sense to me! I had no idea, having read no more than the blurb, which described Binti as afrofuturist.
So should I do all three?
On UK Kindle there are three books: Binti, Binti: Home and Binti: The Night Masquerade which I imagine (in some suitable order) are the three novellas? They're each about £2. There's also a three-volume set https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/kindle/series/B06XSRMZ72 which sets you back about a fiver
That is the read order, Richard.
I have added my own selection for October - A Stranger in Olondria, by Sofia Samatar. I have not read it before, but wanted to pick a fantasy book and this one rates highly on several people's all-time greats list. The sample looked good and made me want to read the rest...
Sounds good!
I have completely forgotten Cloud Atlas! Damn!
> I have completely forgotten Cloud Atlas! Damn!
Well worth reading! If you're really pushed for time then film version gives you a fair but not perfect idea what it's like
Oh! I definitely want to read it! I just totally forgot! I bought it as soon as it was announced!
